Monday's with Mona - Word of the Week: Motivate

November 10, 2018

Are you trying to motivate your employees, customers or clients? You probably already know what motivates you doesn’t always motivate others.  Maybe you worked on a campaign to increase the number of rehab cases your healthcare organization serves where some people always showed up to add value, to grow the initiative and then others who never showed interest in your rehab initiative at all.  Or maybe it was a capital campaign where some gave generously to the organizational cause and then others who disregarded the request for generous donations or simply any donation at all!

Everyone needs motivation at times.  Motivation makes its possible to accomplish what you should accomplish.  As leaders, it is easy to forget the importance of it, but never underestimate its power:

  • Motivation helps people who know what commitment they should make…make it!

  • Motivation helps people who know what they should do…do it!

  • Motivation helps people who know what direction they should take…take it!

Questions to ask yourself:

  • How can you identify and reach different types of people in a way that motivates them?

  • Do you know the personality styles of the people in your circle of influence?

One powerful tool that you may have heard of before or have used is DISC.  DISC is a quick personality assessment tool used to identify the motivators of four different personality styles.  When we understand the different motivators of the four styles and how to effectively communicate with them, you will see improvements in work productivity, teamwork and communication.

The DISC style leadership approach can be helpful generating creative ways to motivate different types of people. Think of the people you want to motivate today. You might not know every person’s style and that’s to be expected. BUT… you simply want to be sure that your motivational efforts address each of the four styles to be most effective.

If you’re having trouble with a department or team, you might want to ask me how DISC can help you know the dominant DISC style of that group or can give you insights into them. Groups as well as people can have personalities, too.

This week’s challenge: “Motivate someone in your circle of influence today!”
